Choosing Bathroom Floors - Some Thoughts

Introduction

A bathroom floor need not, necessarily, have any floor covering at all. Floorboards, if they are sanded, and varnished, can add an authentic touch to a "period" bathroom, and are warm underfoot. They may, however, be draughty, slippery when wet, and allow water dripped on to them to seep through to the ceiling below, if not properly maintained. Many householders therefore prefer a bathroom floor covering of some kind, and, while concerns over durability and aesthetics are perfectly understandable, a bathroom floor must, first and foremost, be resistant to moisture.

Bathroom Floors & Bathroom Floor Heating

Bathroom floor tiles – in ceramic, stone, or slate – provide a durable, waterproof surface, and are fairly easy to install, even by a "do-it-yourself" enthusiast of reasonable competence. Tiles are available in range of sizes – from the standard 6" x 6" upwards – but you should consider the size of tiles in relation to the size of your bathroom. Large, Italian tiles – in sizes up to 22" x 12" – for example, may dwarf a small bathroom, while smaller tiles will, inevitably, involve more grout lines, which collect dirt. Bathroom floor tiles should, of course, be of the non-porous variety.

Vinyl flooring, provided that it is adhered securely to the sub-floor, is also waterproof, and hard-wearing, making it a popular, and inexpensive, alternative in bathrooms. Various thicknesses, colours and patterns of vinyl are available, so you can make a statement in your bathroom, as well as providing comfort underfoot.

Whichever type of flooring you ultimately choose, underfloor heating in your bathroom can provide warmth, without the need for bulky, unsightly, radiators, and make your bathroom floor as inviting in the depths of winter as it is in the height of summer. Electric bathroom, or, indeed, conservatory floor heating systems are perfect for renovation projects, because the heating elements are installed onto the existing sub-floor, and are economical to install, and run. .

The above floor had its skirting removed and replaced after the floor was laid. You have to leave a gap of 10-15mm around the floor to allow for expansion. The skirting covers this and makes for a smarter job. This floor has a beading fitted to the skirting to cover the gap. We recommend a white beading as this matches the skirting.

This is another floor in laminate. It is very effective and looks the part.
The advantages are many. It is cheaper than tiles. Tiling on wooden can be a risk if there is any movement in the floor. It is warmer to the bare foot than tiles. If you ever have a problem under the floor and need to take it up, it is easy and goes back down again. We removed the skirting and replaced it with new. This was to avoid using the traditional beading used to cover the expansion space needed for the laminate. We think that the beading looks wrong and gives away the fact that is a laminate. So the new skirting covers the gap.

We can lay your floor tiles. Here we are laying onto a wooden floor. If there is any movement whatsoever in the old floor, then sheets of plywood must be screwed down to tile on.
